The growing demand for plastic packaging consequently brings increased risks to both human health and the environment. Plastic materials are highly versatile and easily colored, making them ideal for meeting consumer needs while enabling higher profits for manufacturers. Plastic products used for storing food, beverages, and cooking additives such as olive oil may contain harmful substances that can migrate into these products. Exposure to these substances increases the risk of developing both acute and chronic diseases, which can sometimes be fatal. The most common harmful substances include phthalates, bisphenol A, and heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury. Through a review of the literature and data analysis, this paper presents the methods of synthesis and use of these compounds, their migration into the human body and the environment, and the potential negative consequences. Additionally, three significant environmental disasters are described to illustrate the harmful effects of improper disposal of heavy metal waste on human health.
